Maritime Traffic Information

Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is a general term for a range of services including maritime traffic information and maritime traffic service in busy or environmentally sensitive areas. The purpose is to increase maritime traffic safety and prevent damage to the environment.

The Swedish Maritime Administration has established three VTS units along the Swedish coast in Södertälje, Malmö and Göteborg. Vessels in the area are required to notify the VTS unit in the area and provide information about the vessel’s identification, destination, etc., as stipulated in regulations. At the same time, the vessel receives information about other vessel movements and meetings at vulnerable passages.
