The Maritime Traffic Department is responsible for planning and efficiently performing assignments related to pilotage, maritime traffic information and maritime search and rescue, as well as developing and maintaining means of production. The department takes decisions in pilot boat matters, including safety, equipment and common standard. The responsibility also includes coordination of investment issues concerning pilot boats.

Sweden is divided into 6 Maritime Traffic Areas. The offices are located in Luleå, Gävle, Stockholm, Malmö, Göteborg and Trollhättan. There are also three regional VTS centres: VTS East Coast (Södertälje), VTS South Coast (Malmö) and VTS West Coast (Göteborg).

The Maritime Traffic Department includes the Maritime and Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre in Göteborg.

The Quality Management System in effect at the Swedish Maritime Administration, Fairways and Maritime Traffic Departments, Sweden has been approved by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance in accordance with the following standard for quality management systems: ISO 9001:2000 (certificate no. SW970365).

The quality management system is applicable to provision of pilotage service, maritime traffic information, fairways, nautical charting, nautical safety information, icebreaking and maritime search and rescue within Sweden’s area of responsibility.
