The Joint Rescue Coordination Centres share an information system for documentation and decision support, DiscoSAR.

Case management
This part of DiscoSAR is where all information that comes into the MRCC and all decisions taken are documented. All cases are assigned a unique case number. A case may consist of one or (usually) several events.

Resource database
The resource database is a list of all resources – boats, fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, people and fixed resources – that can be used in a SAR mission. In addition to contact details, the database contains information about the resource’s performance, equipment, etc.

Vessel Registry
The MRCC has access to a register of all vessels registered in Sweden that have radio permits and/or are ships. Appropriate resources may be selected from this registry. The information in the registry is taken from two other registries kept by the Swedish National Post and Telecom Agency and the Maritime Safety Inspectorate. Passenger ships of foreign nationality that operate in Swedish waters are also registered.

Ships that have any kind of GMDSS equipment onboard are required to provide the following information to the MRCC:

  • EPIRB ID

  • Means of contacting the ship (e.g., mobile telephone)

  • Contact persons (on land)
