Maritime Navigation and Information Services (MarNIS)
MARNIS is a project within the Sixth Framework Programme of the European Union. The project, with a budget of €17.5 million, is the largest European maritime project yet and consists of 45 partners from 13 countries. The overall objective of the project is to formulate a pan-European infrastrucure for collection, processing and dissemination of maritime information for the period 2012-2020. MarNIS will formally deliver its results in the beginning of 2009.
At the conceptual level MarNIS is introducing improved proactivity in monitoring of ships traffic, improved remedial measures, preventive measures towards High Risk Ships as well as a reduction of the reporting burden on ship masters. The project has strong connections to other projects including AIS, SafeSeaNet, VTS and Port State Control. Based on the solutions arrived at, MarNIS will recommend amendments to EU directives or new directives.
The Swedish Maritime Administration is an active partner in the project.
