Maritime safety - an international matter
Swedish Maritime Administration is working for an increased maritime safety and a better environment. These objectives are in line with both Swedish foreign and domestic transport and environmental policy and have been set up to achieve safety and environmental awareness in the transport sector. Swedish Maritime Administration cooperates actively on the international scene. The aim of this collaboration is to promote the development of a safe, effective and environmentally friendly shipping, but also to deepen international maritime cooperation.
One example of the latter is our collaboration with the Baltic Sea countries on development of common safety and environmental standards in the Baltic Sea that has been going on since the early 90s. The essential feature of the International Projects organisation is practical implementation of safety actions in bilateral and national cooperation. In doing that we use a group of highly qualified experts within the maritime safety sector supported by skilled project leaders for management of the projects.
We use the resources available at SMA and other cooperating organisations in Sweden as well as internationally as for example the World Maritime University (WMU). SMA participates in most of the international projects in the field of maritime safety. Experts’ selection depends on the projects nature and requirements, which might vary from pure technical support to organisation of personnel training and education in respective maritime organisations.

Swedish Maritime Administration - an experienced partner in technical cooperation
The Swedish Maritime Administration has a broad and deep experience of international cooperation in maritime safety and marine environment protection in international bodies such as IMO (International Maritime Organisation), EU and HELCOM (Helsinki Commission).
As a complement to this, the Swedish Maritime Administration has an operation specialised on technical cooperation, the office for International Projects, promoting services of the Administration internationally. Since over one decade, we have actively been operating in over 30 countries worldwide. Geographical focus is on the seas adjacent to Europe.
SMA has established a deep experience of institutional support to maritime safety authorities and ports in several countries. We have recent experience of institutional support, review of maritime safety legislation and assistance in international conventions' implementation, assistance in reorganising, restructuring and strengthening of maritime safety administrations and management training. We also assist EU Accession and Candidate Countries in harmonisation of national legislation and its adjustment to European standards in maritime and environmental safety.
In addition to the broader approach of institutional support, we have delivered specific services in various maritime safety areas, such as:
- Maritime Safety Technical Implementation
- Lecturing and Practical Training in Port State Control and Flag State Control
- Aids to navigation
- Use of satellite navigation, GPS and Differential GPS
- Design and Implementation of Automatic Identification System (AIS)
- Maritime Search and Rescue
- Pollution response co-ordination
- Shipping Dues
- Port Environmental Management
