The purpose of maritime search and rescue is to save lives at sea. The maritime search and rescue service works in the waters around our coasts, both inside and outside the skerries, as well as Lakes Vänern, Vättern and Mälaren. Maritime search and rescue missions are carried out in a cooperative organisation made up of state, municipal and non-governmental bodies.

Maritime search and rescue units from various areas

The Swedish Maritime Administration is responsible for ensuring that maritime rescue services work according to the Swedish Rescue Services Act and the provisions of the Rescue Services Ordinance. We cooperate with neighbouring countries according to the International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The Swedish Maritime Administration cooperates primarily with four other Swedish government agencies, the Swedish Sea Rescue Society and municipal rescue services (fire brigades).

The collective resources consist of:

  • Swedish Coast Guard
  • Swedish Armed Forces
  • Swedish Civil Aviation Authority
  • Swedish National Police Board
  • Swedish Sea Rescue Society
  • The Swedish Maritime Administration’s own resources

These bodies are supplemented by municipal rescue services (fire brigades) for local areas of responsibility.

Assistance

Members of the Swedish Sea Rescue Society are entitled to free assistance with towing, motor breakdowns or leaks.

Membership in Sjöassistans/Stockholm Radio entitles you to equivalent service.
