There are about 210 pilots employed by the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA). SMA provides pilotage and assistance in the navigation to vessels within Swedish territorial waters. On average, 32,500 pilotages are conducted each year.
Pilotage must be ordered five hours before the pilotage starts. The pilot order centres receive the pilot order and designate pilots to every assignment. You can find a list of Pilot order centres in the right column.
Since 1 January 2009 it is the Swedish Transport Agency, who regulate the mandatory pilotage in Swedish waters. Read more on the Swedish Transport Agency website.
