Tugboat restrictions for the port of Norrköping

The restrictions serve as a guide to ordering the right number of tugboats on arrival and departure in the port of Norrköping.

The restrictions are valid during normal current conditions and at a maximum wind speed of 8 m/s. If current and/or wind conditions are above normal, a greater number of tugboats can be needed.

The Pilot will together with the Captain, on a case to case basis, decide if manoeuvring can be performed in a safe way. The decision can be based on factors such as: wind- and current forces on the vessel, manoeuvrable space, ship’s area under and over the water, ship’s own manoeuvrability, UKC, length/width of the vessel, which side alongside, type of tugboats available etc., etc.

The restrictions regard a tugboat pushing a barge (so called pusher) as a regular vessel. This means that the total length of the pusher and barge combined will be used to determine how many tug boats are required.

Tugboats towing a barge are required to use another tugboat for manoeuvring, regardless the size of the barge.

For ships on a regular trade to the port of Norrköping, which are well known by the pilots, there is a possibility to get an exemption from stipulated number of tugboats during “normal circumstances”.

When the restrictions are being  reviewed in an early stage of a ship’s call to the port of Norrköping, delays and extra fees will be minimized.

When only one tugboat is used, the tugboat should be of ASD type, if not otherwise mentioned.

When ordering a pilot, the total number of tugboats, and type required, should be reported as well.

Column
Normal ships:  A ship with a fixed propeller, normal rudder but without bow thruster.
Bow thruster:  
A ship with fixed propeller, normal rudder and bow thruster.

Other

CPP:   Controllable pitch propeller

Active rudder:  Flap rudder type, Becker, Schilling etc.

Azipod:  Propulsion propeller which can be turned 360 degrees.


Bow thruster:  A device which has sufficient power with regards to ship’s size, draft, wind etc. If a ship has an insufficient bow thruster the vessel should be regarded as a ”normal ship”.
