The Trollhätte Canal is 82 km long. The difference in level between Lake Vänern an the sea is 44 m. This charge is catered for by six locks: one at Lilla Edet of 6 m, four at Trollhättan of 32 m in total and one at Brinkebergskulle of 6 m.

Ships have used the Göta Älv and Lake Vänern for centuries. As early as the 16th century there were plans to sail from Lake Vänern to the sea with the help of locks. It was not until the year of 1800 that the first locks were completed. And in 1916 the present locks were taken into use.

An average of five merchant ships pass through the locks daily throughout the year and during the summer months, more than 3,000 pleasure boats.

For safety reasons we strictly advise that pleasure boats do not traffic the canal in the dark or in poor visibility. Merchant marine traffic has priority in the locks. All bridges and locks are remotely controlled by the Central in Trollhättan and each bridge has a sign with information about the next opening.

The cost for passing the canal with a leisure boat is 1000 SEK. Payment is due in lock 3 at the Central in Trollhättan. Credit cards are accepted.
