Leisure vessels equipped with VHF, are recommended to keep watch over channel 68 and if possible even channel 16 during the whole passage through Södertälje Canal.
Vessels are prohibited to navigate in the canal under sail, unless equipped with engine stand by for immediate use or prepared to be rowed.
Leisure vessels must:
- Keep well clear of the side of the canal when meeting merchant vessels or at their passage.
- Leave way for merchant vessels during passage of lock, bridge and regulated part of the canal.
- Keep well clear on the side of the canal or moor on adviced pier upon waiting to pass bridge or lock.
- Upon passing through the lock, moor at advised spot and keep watch over the mooringlines during the watershift.
- The lock fee is payed to the canal crew in the lock. Receipt of the payment shall be placed visibly onboard.
Important light signals
Leisure craft may, due to safety reasons, not meet merchant vessels in the south and northern canal. Light signals are advising the traffic through these parts. The signals are indicated in the sea charts by the symbol: SS 
2 Iso R 3s means stop for all marine traffic.
