NAVTEX

Navtex is an international system for broadcasting navigational warnings, weather reports and ice reports. Only warnings that apply to open waters (outside archipelago), i.e., coastal warnings, are broadcast on Navtex.

The Navtex receiver has a built-in printer that automatically prints out the messages as they are broadcast. There is a simple receiver available for recreational boaters that displays messages on a small monitor instead of printing them out on paper. All information is in English. Mariners may choose to receive all messages or only those applicable to the area they are in. All warnings are broadcast every four hours for as long as they are in force. Broadcast times are shown on the Navtex Transmitters in the Baltic map.

The first broadcast of important navigational warnings takes place as soon as possible after the warning is issued, while routine warnings are broadcast only at regularly scheduled broadcast times.

The Navtex receiver onboard is designed not to print out messages that have already been received.

The Swedish Maritime Administration is responsible for Navtex broadcasts for the area shown on the map within dotted lines. The area is covered by four transmitters: Bjuröklubb [H], Tallinn [U], Gislövshammar [J] and Grimeton[I].
