Main hearing on the fairway between Landsort and Södertälje
News 2026-04-21
In May, the main hearing will begin at the Land and Environment Court regarding the permit application for the development of the fairway between Landsort and Södertälje. The project aims to improve maritime safety and meet the future needs of shipping.
The planned measures involve widening, deepening and realigning sections of the fairway to enable larger vessels to navigate it safely. The measures include dredging and adjustments to the fairway’s route.
— The main hearing is an important milestone for the project. We have spent a long time preparing documentation that both meets the future needs of shipping and takes environmental considerations seriously, says Melica Cliffoord, Project Manager at the Swedish Maritime Administration.
During the main hearing, the Land and Environment Court will examine the application under the Swedish Environmental Code. The focus will be on the project’s environmental impact and the conditions that should apply to the activities. During the hearing, the applicant will present the project, while authorities and other affected parties will have the opportunity to present their views.
— By widening and deepening the fairway, we are creating greater safety margins and enabling larger vessels to navigate the route safely, says Melica Cliffoord.
The development of the fairway is an important step towards strengthening maritime transport in the region, increasing capacity and contributing to a more sustainable transport system. A modernised fairway will enable more efficient transport and reduce the risk of accidents.
The main hearing will take place on 12–13 May and 21 May at The Dock Hotel, Ekdalsgatan 8, Södertälje. Proceedings will begin at 09:30. The case documents are available at the court registry and from Södertälje Municipality. The court’s judgment will be announced at a later date.
