Malmporten Project – Status and Next Steps
News 2026-03-31
Work on the Malmporten Project is progressing. Preparatory dredging in the Port of Luleå was carried out during the summer of 2024 and completed in October as planned. The procurement process for the larger-scale dredging works was then initiated.
In February 2025, the joint procurement process was cancelled because the bids received exceeded the budgeted costs. The procurement of the quay for the new deep-water port was also halted. Since then, the project has been optimised through adjustments to the fairway design, reducing costs without affecting capacity, safety or functionality.
A new procurement process for the dredging works began in September 2025 and is being carried out in two phases: prequalification, followed by an invitation to submit tenders for qualified bidders. The current deadline for submitting tenders is 17 April. This will be followed by discussions and negotiations before a contract award decision can be made.
— It is difficult to say exactly when we will be able to award the contract, but hopefully as early as June this year, says Max Bjurström, Project Manager at the Swedish Maritime Administration.
Dredging is scheduled to begin following the ice break-up in mid-May 2027. The works will cover the new deep-water port, the harbour area and the fairways.
