Pilotage services in Marstrand temporarily suspended
News 2026-10-01
The Swedish Maritime Administration has temporarily suspended pilotage services in the Marstrand pilotage area since yesterday evening out of concern for the wellbeing of its staff. Around ten vessels are currently affected.
Yesterday, the Gothenburg District Court delivered its verdict following the trial of a ship's master and a maritime pilot who had been charged in connection with the tragic accident off Tjörn this summer. Both the master and the pilot were convicted of causing death by negligence, causing bodily injury by negligence and negligence in maritime traffic.
Yesterday afternoon, a meeting was held with staff to address an acute stress reaction within the team. Representatives of the employer and the occupational health service attended the meeting. As a result, the employer announced a temporary suspension of pilotage services out of concern for the wellbeing of its staff.
On Thursday morning, discussions with the team resumed to establish how many employees were too distressed to work and how many were able to return to their pilotage duties.
The Swedish Maritime Administration is in close contact with the shipping companies and ship agents affected by the situation, which concerns the three ports of Vallhamn, Stenungsund and Uddevalla.
Pilotage services are operating as normal in all other parts of the country.
