Skandiaporten project cancels dredging contract procurement

The Swedish Maritime Administration and the Port of Gothenburg AB are cancelling the joint procurement of dredging works for the Skandiaporten project. The reason is that the bids received exceed the budgeted costs for the state-funded part of the project.

“We have decided to cancel the procurement process for the Skandiaporten project because the bids received are significantly higher than the available budget allows. Skandiaporten is an important and necessary investment to ensure competitive transport solutions for businesses, and we look forward to carrying out the project. Together with the Port of Gothenburg AB, and in dialogue with contractors, we are now taking measures to restart the procurement process as soon as possible. Our ambition remains to enable vessels to use the new fairway and quay during 2028,” says Joel Smith, Director of Infrastructure at the Swedish Maritime Administration.

An analysis of the procurement results is currently underway to identify potential cost reductions without compromising the established project objectives. In addition, the Swedish Maritime Administration and the Port of Gothenburg AB will divide the contract into two parts, which will be procured separately. As a first step, the Port of Gothenburg AB will initiate procurement for dredging works closest to the quay (approximately 5% of the total dredging volume), with the work scheduled to take place between August 2026 and May 2027. The Swedish Maritime Administration will then carry out the remaining dredging works, with the aim of starting in 2027.

“Looking ahead, it is important for the Port of Gothenburg AB to maintain the original schedule for the quay reinforcement works and dredging closest to the quay, and that is what we intend to do. We are therefore planning a separate procurement process to be published in November. This is to ensure that the work can continue according to plan,” says Jan Andersson, Project Manager at the Port of Gothenburg AB.

About Skandiaporten

Skandiaporten ensures direct shipping connections to Sweden and secures Swedish businesses’ access to markets worldwide. The Port of Gothenburg is the only port in Sweden capable of accommodating the world’s largest vessels. However, vessels are becoming increasingly large, and the current depth of the fairway already prevents the largest vessels from calling at Gothenburg when fully loaded. To secure future trade, the port needs to be adapted to modern shipping requirements. The project is a collaboration between the Swedish Maritime Administration, the Swedish Transport Administration and the Port of Gothenburg AB.
