Final Report on Shore-Based Navigation Support
News 2026-10-16
The final report from the collaborative research project Shore-Based Navigation Support – Phase 2 is now available to read. The report presents the findings from the project's practical tests and simulations.
The project has explored how a maritime pilot can assist a vessel from a shore-based operations centre. Over the course of just over a year, 117 tests were conducted involving 66 different vessels in the Port of Gothenburg's approach channel. The tests covered passages from the pilot boarding point to just outside the port area. Manoeuvring within the port, berthing operations, and scenarios in which a pilot assists multiple vessels simultaneously were examined using simulators.
The results were previously presented at the project's final conference in Gothenburg on 21 April. The final report now provides an opportunity to explore the project and its findings in full.
The project was funded by the Swedish Transport Administration's Maritime Portfolio and the Swedish Maritime Administration. It is a collaborative research project involving:
Chalmers University of Technology, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden, Linköping University, the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI), the Swedish Air Navigation Services (LFV), the Swedish Transport Agency, the Swedish Maritime Administration, Tärntank Ship Management AB, Thun Group, and Tarbit Shipping AB.
