The Swedish Maritime Administration and Ports of Stockholm have established a joint vessel traffic management centre in Stockholm. By bringing vessel traffic management operations together in shared premises, maritime safety, emergency preparedness and the coordination of vessel traffic along Sweden’s east coast and northern coast are strengthened.

The joint vessel traffic management centre is located at the Värtaterminalen terminal in Stockholm. Here, the Swedish Maritime Administration and Ports of Stockholm work together in modern, shared premises. The centre has been operational since the turn of the year and was officially inaugurated on 28 January.

“It is a pleasure to inaugurate both a unique partnership and new, purpose-built premises. By coordinating resources and expertise, we gain a better overall understanding of all our customers’ needs, leading to more effective collaboration with customers in northern Sweden and along the east coast. At the same time, we can provide better service and benefit from economies of scale, which is advantageous for both businesses and society,” says Erik Eklund, Director-General of the Swedish Maritime Administration.

The new vessel traffic management centre is responsible for coordinating cargo and passenger traffic from Oxelösund northwards along Sweden’s entire east coast and northern coast. It brings together key functions such as vessel traffic management, alarm handling, pilotage planning, traffic monitoring and the issuing of navigational warnings, with the aim of ensuring safe and efficient maritime traffic.

“For the shipping industry, this means a more integrated and predictable vessel traffic service. Early and coordinated planning of vessel arrivals improves safety in ports, reduces waiting times and contributes to more efficient and sustainable transport,” says Magdalena Bosson, CEO of Ports of Stockholm.

The world around us is changing rapidly, placing increasing demands on cooperation. The joint vessel traffic management centre is part of the effort to future-proof vessel traffic services in Sweden by strengthening maritime partnerships between government authorities and port operators.

With shared information, operators gain a comprehensive overview of maritime traffic, enabling them to respond quickly and in a coordinated manner. Modern technology combined with a high level of expertise enables safe and efficient maritime traffic management – 24 hours a day, all year round.

A total of approximately 50 employees work at the joint vessel traffic management centre at Värtaterminalen – a strategically important hub for shipping along Sweden’s east coast.
