Swedish Maritime Administration submits permit application for the Karlskrona project

The project aims to create better conditions for safe, reliable and efficient shipping to and from the Port of Karlskrona. Within a defined area, the fairway is planned to be widened and deepened to make it easier for vessels to pass one another.

The measure will improve both safety and accessibility by reducing the need for vessels to adjust their passages to accommodate each other. At the same time, traffic can operate more efficiently, with positive effects for both the environment and the extensive scheduled ferry services to and from the port.

Environmental considerations have been a central part of the project from the outset. Extensive environmental investigations and analyses have been carried out, including sediment sampling, nature surveys and noise calculations, to ensure that the planned measures comply with applicable environmental requirements and limit the impact on the natural environment and nearby residents.

The planned works are expected to take one to two months.

“The submission of the permit application is an important milestone. After several years of preparation and extensive environmental studies, we are ready to take the next step in developing the fairway to Karlskrona,” says Dalia Rhawi, Project Manager at the Swedish Maritime Administration.
