Maritime assistance service

"The following applies to MAS in Sweden:

1. The Swedish Transport Agency is the primary authority
2. The Swedish Coast Guard is responsible for maritime environmental protection and response
3. The JRCC (Joint Rescue Coordination Centre at the Swedish Maritime Administration) serves as the Point of Contact between vessels and shore within the Swedish Search and Rescue Region (SRR)

MAS operations are carried out in close cooperation primarily between the Swedish Transport Agency, the Swedish Coast Guard, and the Swedish Maritime Administration. However, the Police, municipal rescue services, and local authorities may also be involved.

A MAS alert may be brought to the attention of the authorities through, for example, radio calls or telephone calls requesting assistance. In addition, a maritime rescue case may transition into a MAS case when there is no longer a risk to human life.

The main tasks of a MAS function are to:

1. Receive reports from vessels in need of assistance
2. Monitor the situation affecting the vessel
3. Act as a point of contact between the vessel and shore-based authorities
4. Act as a point of contact between cooperating parties at sea and the coastal state

The language normally used during a MAS operation in Sweden is Swedish or English."
