Södertälje Lock and Canal
Safety and accessibility in the fairways through the Södertälje Canal and Lake Mälaren are being improved.
Södertälje Lock and Canal
This project was commissioned by the Swedish Government. Responsibility for completing the construction works was transferred to the Swedish Transport Administration in autumn 2020, while the Swedish Maritime Administration continues to contribute its nautical expertise. The review of the measures and construction works carried out by the Swedish Maritime Administration and its former contractor has been completed.
The Swedish Maritime Administration will own the infrastructure and be responsible for its operation once the project is completed. The work will therefore be carried out in close cooperation between the two authorities.
The aim is to improve maritime safety and accessibility in the public fairways through the Södertälje Canal and Lake Mälaren. By improving the infrastructure for shipping on Lake Mälaren, pressure can be reduced on the heavily congested rail and road networks.
The project requires extensive work to adapt the Södertälje Lock and Canal to modern vessels and improve accessibility on Lake Mälaren.
