Ystad Fairway and Port

How we strengthened the port

The project involved major improvements to meet the needs of future transport. New quays were built and the harbour basin was dredged to accommodate larger vessels. At the same time, the Swedish Maritime Administration worked to improve safety in the fairway through additional dredging and new navigational aids. All measures were preceded by a comprehensive environmental impact assessment and environmental permit process, enabling the project to be carried out with clear safeguards for nature and the environment.

The project was carried out in cooperation between the Swedish Maritime Administration and Ystad Port AB. The Swedish Maritime Administration was responsible for widening and deepening the fairway into Ystad up to the boundary of the port area, while Ystad Port was responsible for dredging within the port area.

A total of 53,200 cubic metres (tfm³) of material, consisting of rock, sand and clay, was dredged. The dredged material was then deposited in deeper areas outside the fairway using bottom-dumping barges.

The project also included upgrades to fixed and floating navigational aids, with a new leading line guiding vessels into the port and new fairway buoys with synchronised lights. One of the outer buoys was also equipped with an AIS transmitter to enable safer identification when approaching the port.

Success through collaboration

The project was carried out in close cooperation between Ystad Port and the Swedish Maritime Administration. Through their joint efforts, new infrastructure has been created with improved safety and a clear environmental focus. The investment lays the foundation for a sustainable and competitive port in the long term, well equipped for future transport needs and with a strengthened position as a strategic link to Central Europe.
