Important milestone for the new lock in Södertälje

Two of the four new lock gates were recently transported to Södertälje. The first gate has now been installed in the northeastern section of the lock. The second gate will be installed once the southeastern section has been completed, which is expected in 2027.

The lock gates were manufactured in Sölvesborg and transported to Södertälje by barge. They have been custom-built for the new, larger lock and weigh approximately 80 tonnes each. Each gate is 8 metres high and 17 metres wide.

What is a lock gate recess?

A lock gate recess is the space within the quay wall where the gate, or gate leaf, is housed when the lock is open. The lock has two gates at each end, and each gate is mounted within a reinforced concrete structure. This structure is known as the gate recess.
