Registration of emergency beacons

If you find yourself in an emergency, having an emergency beacon can be crucial for calling for help. Below is information on how to register your EPIRB, ELT, and PLB devices.

Emergency beacons

Cospas-Sarsat

Cospas-Sarsat is an international system for receiving distress signals and locating emergency beacons for, among other things, maritime and aeronautical search and rescue. Sweden is one of the member countries of Cospas-Sarsat. There are different types of emergency beacons that transmit on the frequency 406 MHz.

The Swedish Maritime Administration’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) receives alerts from emergency beacons and forwards them to the appropriate authority. They must quickly obtain information about the identity of the person in distress, or confirm that no one is in danger.

PLB

A PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) is an emergency beacon that you can carry in your pocket, whether you are on a boat, on land, or in the air.

Registration and updating of PLB and ELT

Owners/users of PLB and ELT devices manage their own information in the international register IBRD (International Beacon Registration Database). The database is owned and administered by the Cospas-Sarsat organisation.
IBRD registration for PLB and ELT.

When registering for the first time, you create a username and your own password. Please note that you must remember these for future updates. Under the same login, you can register multiple PLB/ELT devices.

To add a new device or update a previously registered PLB/ELT, simply log in using your username and password.

If you forget your password, it is important that you have provided a correct email address. You can then request a “Reset Password” for your account and receive instructions via email.

Please refer to the user guides below for correct registration and updating.

We also recommend completing your registration by selecting “Obtain certificate of registration,” which allows you to save or print your details in case you need them later.
