SEK 59 million to reduce the Swedish Maritime Administration’s emissions

Earlier this year, the Government tasked the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency with identifying which government agencies could quickly switch from fossil fuels to fossil-free alternatives. The review found that eleven agencies could together replace around 16 million litres of fossil fuels during 2026. To support this transition, the Government allocated SEK 500 million in the Spring Amending Budget.

With this funding, the Swedish Maritime Administration can implement several measures during the year that would otherwise have had to be postponed. The initiative will reduce the agency’s climate impact and contribute to a faster transition to fossil-free transport.

The Swedish Maritime Administration operates an extensive fleet of vessels and vehicles, many of which are older. The new funding will make it possible to reduce emissions from current operations while the agency continues its work to gradually renew the fleet.

A major part of the initiative involves replacing fossil diesel with HVO100 and using biomethanol where possible. For the Swedish Maritime Administration’s helicopters, the funding will also enable increased use of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), a more sustainable aviation fuel.

Two electric heating systems and one geothermal heating system will be installed to heat pilot boats while they are berthed.

The initiative also includes the purchase of drones, which can reduce the need for transport by boat, for example when inspecting aids to navigation. In addition, the Swedish Maritime Administration will procure a lighter hybrid vessel for fairway maintenance work. Seven wheel loaders will also be replaced with electric equivalents.
