Compulsory Pilotage
From January 1st, 2009 the Swedish Transport Agency establishes regulations on pilotage in the Swedish territorial waters.
Masters of vessels that have a length of 70 meters or more, a width of 14 meters or more or a draft of 4.5 meters or more are generally obliged to hire pilots on.

The Swedish Transport Agency's regulations and general guidelines on pilotage report the division of maritime traffic areas, local pilot lines and which ship dimensions and ship categories that are required to hire pilot. The Swedish Transport Agency decides where a pilot must be hired within Swedish maritime territory and also issues pilot exemptions, ie exemptions from the pilotage obligation.
